Money makes the whole world go round. Being able to produce a product and selling it for as much profit as possible is key in every emotion. Every economy is different but the most important aspect of keeping an economy successful is maintaining a constant market in which individuals like myself and everyone else keep buying. There are so many different things that we have and own when in actuality there are very few things that we need to survive and live a happy life. Some necessities include water, food, a roof over our heads to protect ourselves, clothes, and shoes. This is a short list compared to the vast amounts of things that we own. While doing research on the things people buy compared to the few things people need, it became evident that everything is sold. Even the most basic necessities are sold in order for someone to make a profit. This experience was very powerful and eye opening. It is amazing that there are few things given in this world and even more amazing to come across a shoe company that gave a pair of new shoes away for every shoe bought. There are many charities and people that aid the poor but there are very few companies like the TOMS shoe company that not only sells a product for profit but also user their net gain to give a pair of the same shoes away to a less fortunate child somewhere suffering around the world in a undeveloped country. The company focuses on giving the priority towards children.
Today’s society consists of many different type of people with different amounts of zeros behind a number in their checkings account, but regardless of the amount of money people pocess, even the poorest of the poor here in the United States have to purchase something regardless of what it is. Living in the Unites States makes it easier to live because of the vast accounts of different cultures and ways of life, but it also comes with a heavy price. People aren’t judged based of their character, values, or even personality; no one takes the time to get to know anyone. We are judged based on the amount of money we have and the many things we pocess. We are worth as much as we have in the unforgiving eyes of society.
There are many reasons to buy products. One of the main reason is to influence the economy in a positive way. The more people buy, the better the economy is. Part of the problem from the recent recession in the United States was that people were hesitant to buy. Money was scarce so priority materials were the only things being bought and other products weren’t being sold. Consequently, many retail stores were forced to be shut down and money was at a stand still.
Toms: Shoes for Tomorrow is a shoe company that sets a great example not only for other companies but also for individuals like myself. It sends a humanitarian message as an effort to stop the greed and promote unselfishness. Living in a developed nation with sufficient material goods including shoes on our feet make it possible for good hearted people to aid others. One easy way in which we can help the poorest children from undeveloped countries is by giving them shoes to wear. The One for One slogan is simple but extremely effective. It promotes that Toms shoe company will give a new pair of shoes to a child in need from an undeveloped nation with the purchase of a stylish pair of shoes. Shoes are a basic physical necessity that every person needs, young or old, in order to complete general every day tasks with out any harm coming to their feet.
Being of Mexican descent, there are many people that come to mind when thinking of people that don’t own shoes. Coming from an impoverished neighborhood where it is necessary for people to walk miles on a daily basis just to obtain food and water or even work on the dangerous fields that provide just enough money to support a family. The idea of someone providing shoes to undeveloped nations is extremely appealing. Taking a trio to mexico is a life changing experience. It allows me to appreciate everything I have including the clothes covering my body and the shoes on my feet. Constantly seeing children walking around with no shirt and shoes in unacceptable. Even though the company isn’t providing a better lifestyle or a substantial amount of money to reduce poverty, it is literally and figuratively giving people an opportunity to stand on their feet.
Shoes are essential. Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot whether they are playing games, doing shores, going to school, or working these children are exposed and are at risk. A leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil transmitted diseases which penetrate the skin through bare feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases. Wearing shoes also prevents feet from getting cuts and sores that are dangerous when they become infected. The shoe company is not only proving an essential good, it is also providing assistance and hope for young children that need it.
Toms shoes was founded with a simple goal. it was meant to aid children in need by providing them with new shoes. It uses the purchasing power of individuals from developed nations to purchase a forty dollar shoe and therefore because of the One for One project, it provides a new pair of shoes for a child. According to their website, “ the Toms mission transforms our customers into benefactors, which allows us to grow a truly sustainable business rather than depending on fundraising for support”. In other words, this isn’t just another company. It is meant to use the power of consumer consumption to aid the poor. Spending forty dollars on a pair of shoes is just the beginning.
