Barahona's "The Co-Worker" Wins Award at Say The Word
by Darren Cifarelli
Sometimes people joke about the "honor" of winning the English Department's Say The Word Essay contest. The grand prize is $100.00, and my favorite post-announcement exclamation has to be,"Oh, wow! Where am I going to find a bank big enough to hold all that money?" So, needless to say, in the Spring of 2009, when I was getting ready to hand out awards in the Imaginative Fiction category—a new category we hadn't intended to give prizes out in—which were unfunded and just a certificate recognizing the accomplishments of the creative writers who had entered the contest, I expected the same jeers. "Did you make that certificate yourself?"—that sort of thing. Well, I was totally wrong.
Ottoniel Barahona, whose script for The Co-Worker, won third place, emailed me and his entire address book, one of the most ecstatic, triumphant thank-yous I've ever read. Ottoniel sent out his joyous announcement to so many people, you probably read it already!
The script was great (Want to read it? Scroll down), and the competition in that category was fierce as well. We hadn't anticipated so many advanced-level students entering with creative / imaginative entries, but we were definitely pleasantly surprised. Over the summer, I got a few more mass emails from Ottoniel, mentioning that he'd formed a film production company, was recruiting actors, and was even offering a scholarship opportunity through some organization he'd formed. And then, the most shocking announcement I received was that the film was complete, and could I help get an on-campus screening together! The first full length film ever produced by a cinema student at LASC (or so Ottoniel tells The Word).
Below are some production photos from the shooting of the film. Congratulations to the whole cast and crew!!!!
