More Taalam Acey
Taalam visited LASC on May 7, 2009, and helped us to create one of our better Say The Word events. He did about an hour straight of spoken word, never once consulting notes--all from memory. His readings were political, personal, inspiring, and all sorts of other adjectives. I knew from "True Lies," the spoken word piece he performs which opens the film American Blackout, that he can talk a mile a minute (and come to think of it, I knew that from listening to him talk on the phone to me at like 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning--aka 5 a.m. Baltimore time), but he also slowed things down, and showed a real textural diversity in how he performed. It was almost like music, just with his voice as all the instruments in the orchestra. Truly a pleasure to behold, as I imagine all those who saw him would agree. Thanks Taalam.
If you missed it, check out his stuff on You Tube. He blogs quite regularly as well. www.taalamacey.com. Much more stuff is available there.

Say The Word Spoken Word Artist Rex Butters Performs Regularly in Venice
The Talking Stick proudly presents JAZZ FUNK FEST on Saturdays, June 20, Sept 19 and Dec 19 from 7-10pm, free admission at 1411 Lincoln Blvd, Venice CA 90291, phone 310-450-6052, more info: laughtears.com 310-306-7330
In the tradition of the Venice West Cafe (the legendary Beat hang-out at 7 Dudley Ave, aka Sponto Gallery from 1984-2008), local Venice musicians will celebrate the rebellious liberation of tuneful creativity.
At 7pm, BLACK SHOE POLISH. Within the free collective BSP, words that should never be said collide with notes that should never be played. Fiery poetic painter Rex Butters slap sense into words through multi-dimensional discourse. Clifford Novey & Gerry Fialka combine fantastical funky fretwork with keyboards and a cauldron of controlled chaos, creating ink stained improvisational interplay. Spoken Word and Free Improvisation as it was never meant to be, Black Shoe Polish reconvenes the Inconceivable with righteous rascality.
At 8pm, FREDDY GINNS & ZEBRA PARTY provide original witty lyrics to their jazzy blues ala Mose Allison and Detroit funk keyboardist Lyman Woodard.
At 9pm, Lyrical multi-instrumentalist ERIC AHLBERG'S JAZZ WORKSHOP recall the explorations of Public Enemy, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and John Coltrane with tasty world beat tangents.
