Meg Whitman's Run for Governor
(David McNew/Getty Images) It is my understanding that an election is a formal decision-making process whereby a population chooses an individual to hold a public office. With our up-coming elections in California, it is essential that we hold those running for office accountable for fairness and totally responsive to the needs of the people – not big campaign contributions from special interests. According to some of the Ads I’ve seen on various news channels, Candidate Whitman has put in excess of $30 million of her own money into her political
war-chest. This serves the needs of big money contributors, not everyday working voters like me. She is only for the rich and powerful and no in between, for her commercials seem to show only rich whites and other wealthy supporters. Also, the ads show Meg as the superior white candidate of hope for her people against big government. They are focused on the conservative left wing population and do not address the issues and needs of all the people in our state. Meg’s media team is focusing on the wealthy, tea party members and the undecided.
This candidate has refused to address news reporters without having scripted assistance from her staff. She has failed to show-up at news events and have refused to participate in open debates. Her ads are misleading and do not present a true picture of the Real Meg Whitman-her money is doing the talking. A way to resolve this situation is for the networks to allow a certain amount of free equal airtime to the candidates. This could be done through open public debates, town hall meetings, forums, interviews, and like the stimulus allotment, a credit of so much airtime for Ads. One of the biggest threats we face in our future is political contributions and advertising with the way our elected officials are chosen and re-elected. This impacts our entire governmental foundation – of the people, by the people, and for the people. Special interest money and the deluge of lobbyists, along with companies being awarded huge contracts, are etching away at the very foundation of our decision making rights.
The tactics being used by Candidate Whitman try to dominate the political process to prioritize her way of giving information to the registered qualified voters of California. Meg claims that she wants what’s best for California by keeping the money here; however, her campaign team is based mostly in Texas and various other states. If she is sincere about keeping the money here, then why is she already paying it out to people who do not live in California? We have many qualified Californians who could use one of those jobs she talks about bringing back to California. Her campaign headquarters is in northern California but her workers and her money are out-of-state.
“California is bleeding jobs. And Meg Whitman is the only candidate running for governor who has a focused plan to put Californians back to work” (Meg News Channel). There is a lot left to be desired after reading this statement. To ad insult to injury, read the following: “Whoa! Hold your horses! The Wall Street Journal reported that Meg Whitman created a $2 Billion dollar deficit for eBay shareholders with her disastrous acquisition of Skype,” a software application that allows users to make free telephone calls over the Internet to other users and download for free. “Her successor at eBay is now cleaning up the failure of Meg Whitman and her campaign majordomo, former Skype President Henry Gomez, on the backs of eBay’s shareholders. Now Meg Whitman is asking Californians to send her to Sacramento to clean up another multi-billion dollar budget deficit. If past performance is indicative of future results, Californians can’t afford Meg Whitman’s disastrous record of fiscal mismanagement” (Poizner for Governor Director Kevin Spillane). This candidate has not registered to or voted in 28 years. Where does her loyalty lie? “Reporter: Did you ever register as a Republican before 2007?” “Whitman: So what I have said is that I did not vote as often as I should. I didn’t register as often as I should and I’m sorry about that and there is no excuse for it.” This is what she repeated over and over again each time the question was asked. (You Tube 09/28/09) This writer says it best, “I think this campaign is a combination of self-medication and marketing exercise. (Meg’s proudest (and only) political achievement is coming up with John McCain’s campaign slogan, “Country First.”) She is a salesperson and values success itself. I don’t think she wants to govern at all; I think she just needs to win things to make the rage go away.” (Chris Kelly)
In conclusion, I feel these ads are misleading in principle. Meg Whitman will not elaborate on the fact that she told KNBC that she would “veto” all bills that do not advance her priorities of creating jobs, slashing government and reforming public schools. Also, she would balance the budget by cutting 40,000 plus jobs with attrition. She admits not having any experience with unions of any kind. Whitman doesn’t know many politicians by name due to her inexperience politically. She has only worked with troubleshooting for companies. Whitman was asked if eBay had to start over again, which state would she pick? She said Texas! Whitman is running a campaign that is focused on the conservative left wing population and it appears to be working. There is enough misleading information sprinkled in to deceive the liberal or middle class into thinking that she is the candidate that they should vote into office who can solve all the problems we’re having here in our state of California. It is highly deceptive and an insult to the intelligence of the common people. Political Analyst William Bradley says something new and more than a little bizarre is busy being born in California. Call it post-journalism politics: Meg Whitman has been on an advertising blitz, trying first to purchase the Republican nomination for governor and, ultimately, the governorship itself. After terrible performances in press conferences and interviews with knowledgeable reporters, her high priced handlers have decided to drop the pretense of normal campaign engagement, dispensing entirely with press conferences. ( NewWestNotes.com) This candidate has a way with words to dodge the real issues so as not to be held accountable for the continued plague of insensitivity spread over the masses by the Republican Party.
