Crisis in Haiti
“I am appalled that children are starving to death in a country so close to Americas borders. I call on US aid to take immediate action to locate all Haitian children who are in danger of starvation”- Maxine Waters.
“Wet poverty is worse than dry poverty”- Resident of Haiti.
Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. They have an abysmal unemployment rate topping the charts at 80 %; they have been in need of aid for what seems this entire decade. An estimated 78 % of there population lives on only 2 dollars a day. Which is ridiculous considering that a single meal in Haiti can cost anywhere from 50 to 200 dollars depending on the area. The only thing that was keeping most people alive was the help of neighbors; now to put salt on a fresh wound, They have been ravaged by a string of hurricanes (Fey, Gustave, Hanna, and Ike). This has resulted in the deaths of 800 people and the displacement of 150,000 to 200,000 Haitian people.
The hurricanes have caused flooding on a massive scale, reducing their makeshift style homes to scrap metal. Also it has almost completely decimated the agriculture section causing up to about 200 million dollars in damage.
“Three days without water is nothing. People in southern Haiti went ten days without water”- U.S aid official.
There has been a perpetual lack of food, water, and shelter (that includes dry areas to lie down on).there food crisis was so bad that they had resorted to improvised foods. One such food is mud cookies it’s said to be a foul tasting thing and very poisons. In just the months of August and September, there was more damage to there nation then there citizens combined dollar amount. It is currently sitting at one billion dollars worth of damage.
“Congress is deeply concerned with Poverty in Haiti, and we have provided U.S aid with ample resources to address the needs of the Haitian people. Following the hurricanes, I initiated a request to congressional leaders for disaster assistance for Haiti, and congress appropriated 100 million dollars. It is now up to US aid to use it effectively”- Maxine Waters.
This money won’t replace what they lost but it will save lives. It would take a outrages amount of work to rebuild Haiti, yet the precedent it would set for America and other nations could lead to a new world order.
“On February 28, 2008, I sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, urging him to use his influence to expedite the cancellation of Haiti’s debts and to immediately suspend all further debt service payments from Haiti. The letter was signed by 54 members of the House of Representatives, including Chairman Barney Frank and Ranking Member Spencer Bachus. Unfortunately; I received a disappointing response to my letter. Treasury informed me that Haiti is not expected to receive complete debt cancellation at the present time”-Maxine Waters
The citizens have risen up against political leaders numerous times. Causing wide spread riots and attempted attacks on there presidents. Demanding from there elected official to reinforce there economy instead of working of the debts. I believe they’ve concluded that there is no reason to pay the debt if it will lead to the extinction of there nation. I believe Maxine Waters should be commended for her work to help preserve foreign nations. She has fought extremely hard to preserve the people of Haiti. Even though she has found extreme resistance in the Senate, Couple that with our own economic strife and you have numerable problems with no solution in sight. I think the most glaring problem with Haiti is that people don’t understand the severity of their situation. The majority of America isn’t even aware there is a problem in Haiti, besides the hurricanes that have recently hit them. They have no idea they are the poorest country in this hemisphere. That they have a debt over a billion dollars which is more money then their entire population owns.
“I want Members of Congress to learn as much as we can about its causes. Only then can we begin to develop solutions that will be appropriate for the magnitude and complexity of this crisis”- Maxine Waters.
